The premise of the "On Your Birthday" concept is quite simple - to make an unforgettable birthday memory for a child in need of good cheer.  Where did the idea for "On Your Birthday" come from?  From a child, of course.

It all started early one Saturday morning a week before my daughter's fifth birthday.  While the rest of the family slept, Annie and I enjoyed some special moments together talking about her upcoming birthday and her special wish for a pink princess bicycle with "big girl wheels."

Annie and I decided to do some Internet shopping to fulfill her wish.  She eagerly jumped on my lap and we began to "shop" for the perfect pink bicycle.  We scanned website after website.  Unexpectedly, in a quiet moment, Annie asked, "Are there boys and girls who don't get presents on their birthdays?"  I told her that, sadly, there are many children who probably don't get birthday gifts.  She quickly responded, "Can't we give them presents?"  I fumbled for an answer and couldn't get her question out of my head the rest of the day.

Why couldn't we "give them presents" as Annie asked?

And so, the "On Your Birthday" initiative was born.  An idea that couldn't have come from me or any other adult.  An idea that could have only come from a child who pretends that she's a princess and believes that everyone's wish should come true.  The idea of giving on a day when we traditionally receive could only have come from a child, and is as pure and sweet as the heart of every child.
